“On the twelfth day of PASMas, my PASPals gave to me... One rainbow rider, two zinesters sober, three bad things blooming, four fatal flaws, five femme black boys, six savaged shelters, seven wild worlds, eight doodles doodling, nine stars a' strobing, ten hearts a' breaking, eleven oceans dulcet, twelve spirits singing… and an All-Star reading at Betty's.”
PASTEL Magazine’s first All-Stars spin-off saw twelve exceptional and previously published contributors - or ‘PASPals’ - return to celebrate the publication’s bold and beautiful year, and to showcase their work and identities as artists in published, extended interviews.
Doubling as PASTEL’s Christmas issue, All-Stars rang in the holiday season, and another year around the PASPlanet, with an adapted ‘Twelve Days’ carol sing-a-long, at the issue’s jovial Live Launch. Budding PASPals and further alumni took to an open mic opportunity, sharing their poetry with audience mulled on frankincense, gold, and wine.
Writing and designing for PASTEL All-Stars was humbling in its nostalgia. While exciting in the scripting of interview questions covering the projects and achievements featured PASPals had accrued since their original appearances, simply the existence of All-Stars by way of a year’s support from contributors, purchasers, and Launch attendees saw the project materialise with a deep sense of gratitude. A very Merry Christmas, indeed.
